As we approach that one day each year that is set aside to give honor to the men and women who have given of themselves to serve our nation I must admit my heart will be filled with mixed emotions.
My heart goes out to those young men and women who served our nation in a capacity far different from those they chose to protect. Hundreds of thousands allowed themselves to be sent to Viet Nam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other parts of the world under the guise of protecting “democracy” and “freedom” and in order to perform this they had to murder innocent men, women, and babies. In that sense our leaders turned them into “killing machines’ and the real tragedy comes when they are the fortunate ones who live to return home where a number of them commit suicide, murder, are shot by police, or experience how much they were appreciated by our leaders when they get home to find politicians saying they are costing our government too much to care for the wounds they received serving their desires.
To add to their wounds they discover they did not, in fact, kill to protect our “freedom”, they don’t really know why they were there.
On the other hand, I will choke at every speech given by those politicians only looking to exploit that patriotism of these men and women. The vast majority of these politicians, who found no revulsion at putting these young people in harms’ way, for no apparent reason other than greed and wealth.
In order to assure their kids would not have to be turned into these killing slaves the politicians did away with the draft. No longer would the likes of Daddy Bush have to pull strings in order to have his sons turned into these machines. In this case, however, the son, George W, made things worse by deserting (One first goes AWOL, but after 30 days one is considered as a deserter. “Junior’ could not be located for over 30 days), but that has been covered up by the Corporate Media Propagandists (CMP) and remains only a memory for Dan Rather who brought it up and was fired. The draft also protected the likes of Dick Cheney, six times! Yet, here was a person whose lies on at least two occasions led to sending our young people into Harms’ way, and 9/11 could very well be a third as now even the Taliban has come out denying they had anything to do with the al Qaeda 9/11 plot. They sent a letter to the American Congress. The Taliban refused to turn Osama bin Laden over to our government and reminded Congress that they denied any culpability of the mass murders on 9/11 from the very beginning. Their failure to turn over bin Laden also stems from the fact there is no proof of his involvement. Even our own FBI says they have no proof he was behind those mass murders. On cursory investigation of that tragic event one name comes up, the one who was in charge during those two plus hours – Dick Cheney! The person who lied us into at least two episodes that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and left millions either maimed or orphaned. But that’s another investigation for another time. Let’s just hope he doesn’t have the balls to give a speech on Veterans’ Day.
We are all pretty much aware of the recent travesties in Afghanistan and Iraq, in fact that, in my opinion, was a main reason the people elected Barack Obama in 2008 as they were looking for a change, to get out of those travesties, and also to investigate the war crimes and crimes against humanity invoked by the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice/Ashcroft cabal.
Unfortunately, Obama, who promised us “Change you can believe in”, transparency, honesty, re-Constitution, hope, and more, has not only failed in all of those but has continued along the same path.
He actually has joined the Bush/Cheney crime family when he said he was looking forward. Those crimes, according to Obama, would simply go away as though they did not happen if we simply didn’t look at them. To make him, Obama, look even worse we have Cheney and now Bush actually admitting to authorizing torture, actually admitting to war crimes, yet Obama continues to do nothing other than have whistleblowers prosecuted, we even have some of the young people who went to “save freedom” prosecuted for carrying out what has been admittedly authorized by their leaders.
So on November 11, 2010 we will hear speeches from the likes of Obama and other politicians who had a hand in the killings of innocent men, women, and children playing tribute to the men and women of our armed services, people who rightfully deserve that tribute, not for the needless killings they have been sent to perform, or for the greed of the military industrial complex who profits from the blood of these youngsters, but for their heartfelt love of our nation.
Maybe if we could just stop the hypocrisy in Washington DC and the halls of Congress, we could fulfill the dreams of these young people who choose to serve and protect our nation, but only when that protecting is real and not some pipe dream of some political think tank who have a compulsion toward sending our youth to the killing fields for some profit.
Only when that protection is for “real” can these young people fulfill their goal – that of protecting their loved ones, you, me, and our country.
